in recent years, tissue ablation by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has received increasing interest and application as a novel non-invasive modality for local treatment of various solid tumors. The clinical value of HIFU has been evaluated for more than ten years, thus, this innovative technique proved to be a safe and effective treatment option with minimal clinical impact on a patient´s life style and minimal invasiveness.
During HIFU external ultrasonic energy is transmitted into a lesion causing coagulation necrosis in the target region. Hence, lesions are completely destroyed in situ, leaving the skin intact. At present, treatment is either guided by ultrasound (ultrasound-guided HIFU; US-guided HIFU) or by magnetic resonance imaging (MR-guided HIFU; MRgHIFU).
The international HIFU meeting “HIFU: Fundamentals and clinical practice” on September 4-5, 2015 in Bonn, Germany, addresses theoretical as well as practical and clinical aspects of both, US-guided and MR-guided HIFU in all body regions. The event aims to define state-of-the-art HIFU applications. It offers opportunities and platforms for researchers as well as clinicians who have engaged or are going to engage in this interesting topic of non-invasive medicine. It will offer a chance to exchange clinical and scientific experience with experts from Europe, America and Asia.
We hope you can join the meeting and look forward to see you in Bonn!
